Glimpses of activities carried out by IIT Roorkee under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan

Small steps make difference, and as one of the first steps ever taken in this direction in the villages of Chandpur and Horwala, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee collaborated with the Uttranchal Ayurvedic Hospital, Dehradun and organized a health camp on Nov 5, 2017, where 216 patients, 125 females and 91 males were given free consultation by trained, professional gynecologist, physician, pediatrician, ophthalmologist, and ENT specialists. This didn’t stop at diagnosis, instead was followed by the distribution of free medicines, ranging from basic paracetamol, amoxyicillin and cough syrups to sprays, eye drops and glucometers.

32 Biogas Plants installed in Meerpur Village

By the efforts of Team Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee, 33 biogas plants have been successfully installed in Meerpur Village.

The UREDA officials addressed the camp one by one, all explaining about the different benefits of Biogas plants. About 200 people attended the camp. After the officials had completed their addresses, an interactive session was also organized on October 3, 2015, to help the villagers address their doubts about biogas plants.

In two months after the session, 10 biogas plants had been installed in the cluster of Meerpur-Muwazarpur. And as of January 06, 2018, a total of 32 biogas plants have been installed in the village.

“The Future is Green, Sustainable and Renewable Energy.”

An awareness session was organized on October 14, 2017, for the promotion of Biogas plants among the residents of Village Puranpur of Bahadrabad Block in Haridwar District by Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee in collaboration with Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency.

The camp received more than 110 attendees, the UBA team members worked enthusiastically and were guided by Ms. Vandana, Mr. Yashpal Singh, UREDA officials, Mr. Chatrapal Singh, enthusiastic people and Mr. Pavanpal, Pradhan of the Puranpur village.

Women Health and Hygiene Camp

Observing the lack of awareness about adolescence among the students, Adolescence Awareness Programme was initiated in Meerpur Village. An interactive session was conducted for the students of Class IX-XII of the Government Inter College, Meerpur on August 19, 2017, by the team.

Further general discussion with the female students suggested the need of awareness on “Women Health and Hygiene” for the elder women of the village too.

Hence, a session on “Women Health and Hygiene” was conducted by Dr Abha Bharghava, Gynecologist on August 27, 2017, in GIC. A total of 64 women from all age groups attended the session. Dr Abha covered various topics like sanitation, use of sanitary napkins and disposal of menstrual waste.

“Fighting for ourselves means manufacturing our own weapons of self defense”

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee organized a 2-day Self Defense Workshop for 115 feamle students of Junior High School in village Meerpur-Muwazarpur on March 04 and March 05 , 2017 to make an attempt towards shaping the image of a strong, confident and modern woman. Taekwondo Team at IIT Roorkee provided their valuable support and coordinated this workshop.

There is no tool for development effective than the women empowerment. And team UBA IITR understands this fact perfectly.

“Because Knowledge is Power”

To remove the shackles the villagers have towards using banking facilities and in the long run to make them financially included, an obligatory Financial Literacy Camp was conducted on October 27, 2017, in villages Beladi-Salhapur and Meerpur-Muwazarpur of Haridwar District by Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee in collaboration with Punjab National Bank, Haridwar to disseminate simple message of financial prudence through awareness campaign.

The camp included guidance on various financial issues, like, loans, savings, financial frauds, schemes and services, demonetization, e-transactions, etc. In all, the camps received more than 100 attendees in which they also asked their queries to the speaker.

“Encouraging young minds”

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee organized a 2-day event “Visit to IITR” in which 14 meritorious students of Village Chharba, were provided an opportunity to witness the atmosphere of an I.I.T. During this visit, the students got to know about the various ongoing campus activities, visited different departments and laboratories and interacted with the students of IITR.

One of those students, Mr Abhijeet Rathi, got motivated and got a lot of energy from the visit. After that he started preparation for JEE entrance and made it to IIT Roorkee. Mr Abhijeet Rathi is currently pursuing his B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering at I.I.T. Roorkee.

Army Recruitment Awareness Camp

On July 29, 2017, a Career Counselling Survey was conducted in the Government Inter College, Chharba under the Career Counselling Initiative of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee team in which 124 students of Class X, XI and XII participated. The report of the survey suggested that 29% of the students wished to pursue a career in Army/Police but were not much aware of the procedure and the required qualifications.

So considering the need of the hour, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee along with the Youth Foundation, conducted an “Army Recruitment Awareness Session” in the Government Inter College of Chharba and Horawala on September 9, 2017 and October 28, 2017 respectively. A total of 145 aspirants, including 30 girls attended the event. The session covered various topics like qualifications required for Army recruitment, changes in rules in the near past and the life one can expect after getting recruited in Army.

“A healthy mind lives in a healthy body!”

Keeping the above fact in mind, a sports meet was organised in Primary School 2, Chharba, Government Inter College(GIC), Chharba and Primary School, Chandpur on January 27, 2018. Sports Meet was supplemented by some academic activities, namely, Essay writing, Mehandi Designing, General Quiz and sketching competition.

45 students attended the sports activities in the Primary School while 115 attended the same in GIC, Chharba. The number of participants in Quiz, Essay writing, Sketching and Mehandi competition were 70, 71, 49 and 22 respectively. 36 students, including 22 girls participated in a 100-meter race, spoon race, frog race, three leg race and sac race in Primary School, Chandpur. All the winners were felicitated by the Pradhan and Principal of Government Inter College.

Child Sexual Abuse Awareness

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, IIT Roorkee conducted a session on “Child Sexual Abuse Awareness” for female students of Government Intermediate College(GIC), Chharba. The initially hesitant students finally started participating and responding to the speakers. The female teachers of GIC too joined Mrs Rawat in taking up the session.

A total of 77 students from class VI-IX attended the session. Most of the students admitted that it was the first time someone was talking about safe touch and unsafe touch with them. The Team intend to continue working in the field to sensitize the youth towards the issue.
