RuTAG IIT Kanpur has been set up with the support of Office of Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India.
The objective is to take up projects on technology development which can lead to mini and micro entrepreneurship activity in the region.
Development and dissemination of technology oriented towards Rural Entrepreneurship and Rural Employment
Interactions with the relevant grassroots based NGOs and S&T institutions for identifying problems, needs and demands from the area and creating a mechanism to provide the best possible S,T&M inputs in a comprehensive manner to this sector.

A network of 12 NGOs has been formed. has been formed that has assisted in identifying problems; two workshops have been held in which NGOs, farmers, manufacturers, grass root organizations and other stakeholders participated in large numbers
Project to improve the metallurgy of horse shoes has progressed well in the leadership of Dr S Sangal and Dr Nilesh Gurao. Researchers have developed improved processing technique that has given encouraging results. Testing has been done on 12 horses and 80 horse shoes.
Summer Internship programme of 8 weeks involved 4 teams of students in the mentorship of professors ran successfully. Two projects got completed- solar dryer and amla pricking machine for the amla cluster of Pratapgarh. The prototypes have been demonstrated to the users and were well received. Based on the inputs of users, students are now working on making improvements in the machines.
A manually operated Harvesting machine was developed by Shantanu Aggarwal and Dr J Ramkumar, and has been demonstrated at a Kisan Mela. The machine is suitable for small and marginal farmers with small land holdings. Based on the inputs of users, new prototype is being developed.
The Rutag team has made visits to glass-ware cluster of Firozabad, metal-ware cluster of Moradabad, perfumery of Kannauj, leather cluster of Kanpur and amla/food processing cluster of Pratapgarh. A detailed survey of Pratapgarh is being taken up this month to document the processes and develop a shelf of projects.
IIT K community (faculty, staff, students) has and will help in developing technology for rural India.

In the new curriculum there are provisions for the students to work on project based courses where in students can opt for rural India projects
IIT K thro RuTAG - IIT K will continue to float summer internship/B Tech projects to the students all over India.
Invite the students to campus during summer/winter vacation to nurture the idea and develop prototypes.

Train the teaching in primary and middle level schools.
Create model lectures, experiments, materials, exercises and notes for primary and secondary level education.
Create awareness about health and hygiene
Advice on quality and sources of portable water
Setup laboratories and experimental kits in schools for physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology
Advice on municipal planning to solve problems of water logging, drainage, roads and transportation
Teaching of artisans on handicrafts and related technologies
